BUFFALO, NY— At sunrise Wednesday morning there was a lunar eclipse, when the earth passed directly between the sun and the moon. The earth's shadow appeared to make the moon disappear.
In 1504 Christopher Columbus was having trouble with the inhabitants of Jamaica. He knew a lunar eclipse was about to take place and told the Jamaican natives, who no longer wanted to feed his crew, that he had the power to make the moon disappear. When the moon did 'disappear' his crew was feed as much as they wanted.
The Golden Griffins made the 10th ranked offense in the nation disappear Wednesday afternoon.
The Broncs were held to just one goal and lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Canisius.
“We just need to become a better road team,” said Rider head coach Charlie Inverso. The Broncs are now 1-3-2 on the road, opposed to 3-1 at home. “Teams are no longer taking us lightly. They are all bringing their 'A' game when they play us.”
Junior Florian Valot (Monaco, France) scored with five minutes left in the first half to cut the Canisius (6-3-2, 1-1-1 MAAC) lead to 2-1, but that was as close as Rider (4-4-2, 1-2 MAAC) could get.
The Broncs played a man-down (due to a second yellow card) for over 60 minutes, during which the Golden Griffins scored three times. “So much changed after the second yellow card,” Inverso said. “That's what you face on the road, all kinds of obstacles.”
Canisius out-shot Rider 29-9, including 20-2 in the second half. 'I don't care what the shot totals are,” Inverso said, “we generated enough offense today to win the game.”
In the Rider net, sophomore David Pastuna (Robbinsville, NJ) made seven saves and allowed four goals. Sophomore Jimmy Quilter (South Brunswick, NJ) made five saves and played 25 shutout minutes.
Rider defeated Canisius 2-1 last season in Lawrenceville. The Broncs won 2-1 here in Buffalo in 2012.
The two teams have now met 20 times with the series now tied at 10-10.
Rider travels to Quinnipiac for a MAAC game Saturday. “Now we have to pay the defending conference champs on the road,” Inverso said. “I'm confident. We are a good team.”
Rider soccer fans are hoping the 10th ranked offense in the nation will reappear.
