Women's College Basketball – Home Opener
Rider Hosts LIU Brooklyn Thursday Night
LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University women's basketball team opens the home portion of the 2013-14 schedule when the Broncs host LIU Brooklyn on Thursday at 7 p.m., in Alumni Gymnasium, which will include the debut of the new 16x9 video board for women's basketball.
Former Northeast Conference rivals, this is the first meeting between Rider and LIU Brooklyn since December 5, 1997 when the Broncs posted a 64-52 victory over the Blackbirds in the semifinals of the Columbia Tournament.
Rider (0-2) is led by senior MyNeshia McKenzie (Springfield, Pa./Springfield (Delco)). A Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Preseason First Team honoree, McKenzie has posted a 'double-double' in each of her first two games this season and is averaging 21.0 points and 12.5 rebounds per contest.
The Broncs are also led by junior Emily Fazzini (Wayne, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) who is scoring 13.0 points per game.
Rider opened the season with a 67-62 loss at Lafayette on November 8 and the Broncs were tied late at Seton Hall on November 10 before the Pirates pulled away for an 86-75 victory.
In the game against the Leopards, McKenzie scored career point 1,000, only the 19th player in Rider women's basketball history to reach that milestone. McKenzie will be honored with the game ball prior to tip-off.
A 92-game veteran, McKenzie is now 17th all-time on Rider's scoring list (1,037) and she is fourth all-time on the Rider rebounding list with 812.
Rider is 15-2 all-time against LIU Brooklyn.
The Blackbirds enter play, coming off a 62-59 loss to Columbia on November 8.
LIU Brooklyn returns nine letterwinners, including four seniors and the Blackbirds are led by 6-0, senior guard Cleandra Roberts who scored 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds in 26 minutes against the Lions.
Thursday is the first of three home games in a row as Rider will host cross-town rival Princeton November 19, at 7 p.m., and the University of Delaware on November 24 at 2 p.m.
