LAWRENCEVILLE–The Rider University men's tennis team dropped a non-conference game against Queens College, being swept 7-0.

“In our doubles matches, everyone played very well,” head coach Ed Torres said. “They played tremendous doubles. They're better doubles players than singles players. However, as good as they were at doubles, they didn't play well at singles.”

Senior Rollie Malfitano (Wenonah/Gloucester Catholic) lost his match at first singles 6-1, 6-4.

Freshman Chanton Phan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) lost his match at second singles 6-1, 6-0 with senior Nick Lubold (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) losing at third singles 6-0, 6-2.

Senior Sean Sweeney (Franklinville/Delsea Regional), and freshmen Adam Levi (Princeton Junction/Pennington School) and Ed Chogllo (South River) lost at fourth, fifth and sixth singles.

Sweeney lost 6-1, 6-1 while Levi lost 6-1, 6-2. Chogllo lost 7-6, 6-0.

“You improve the singles game by not going for spectacular shots when you don't have that type of shot,” Torres said about fixing the singles play. “If you're hitting the ball from the baseline or the backcourt, and you go for a winning shot, it is the wrong thing to do. You have to work the point. It's easy to say and to understand, but harder to execute.”

In doubles play, Rider was able to win the second doubles match with the duo of Phan and Levi winning 9-7.

The team of Malfitano and Lubold lost 8-5 while senior Kyle Stratton (Stratford/Sterling) and Sweeney lost 9-8.

“These guys like playing doubles,” Torres said. “When we have practices, they enjoy the doubles play more because of the teamwork. I'm very happy about the doubles play today.”

The men's team next travels to Philadelphia University on Oct. 8 for a nonconference matchup.
