Wagner College 6, Rider University 1
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—The Rider University men's tennis team lost a non-conference match at Wagner College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Seahawks won 6-1.
“The match was closer than the score indicated,” said head coach Ed Torres. “First and second singles was close as was fifth singles and the doubles play as well.”
For Rider, freshman Ed Chogllo (South River) won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles.
“Ed served well,” said Torres. “He was good on his ground strokes and kept the ball in play. He played a steady match and didn't make many errors.”
Senior Rollie Malfitano (Wenonah/Gloucester Catholic) took his opponent to three sets before losing 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 at first singles.
In doubles play, senior Sean Sweeney (Franklinville/Delsea Regional) and senior Kyle Stratton (Stratford/Sterling) teamed up for an 8-5 win at third doubles. Wagner won two of three doubles matches to take the team point.
“Wagner hit with a little more power,” Torres said. “They put more plays away.”
Both the Rider men and women host Mount St. Mary's on Saturday at noon.
