Men's College Tennis
La Salle University 7, Rider University 0
LAWRENCEVILLE--The Rider University men's tennis team was swept by La Salle University on Tuesday afternoon.
"There were three close matches," said head coach Ed Torres. "One in doubles play and two of the singles matches."
For Rider, sophomore Rollie Malfitano (Wenonah/Gloucester Catholic) won six games at number one singles before losing 6-4, 6-2 with freshman Stephen Brand (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) winning five games at second singles before losing in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
"We were missing two starters due to class but the top of the lineup really held their own," Torres said. "The first two singles were good matches. A lot of long rallies and well played. A little bit of luck and it could have gone our way."
Brand and junior Drew Laverty (Mount Royal/Kingsway Regional) teamed up for a strong match at second doubles before losing 8-7 (1).
"We really should have won the second doubles match," Torres said. "We were ahead 6-3, then 7-5 and 7-6 and didn't hold on. We only got one point in the tiebreaker but it was a well played match."
The Rider women's tennis team travels to Easton, Pennsylvania to face Lafayette Wednesday afternoon.
"The guys enjoyed playing and competed hard as they usually do," Torres added.
