BRONX, N.Y.--Broncs lose in the Bronx.
The Rider University men's tennis team lost a non-conference match at Fordham University on Wednesday morning.
"Fordham has a very strong team," said head coach Ed Torres. "They only had two returnees but have six very good freshmen."
For Rider, sophomore Rollie Malfitano (Wenonah/Gloucester Catholic) (first singles) and junior Drew Laverty (Mount Royal/Kingsway Regional) (second singles) each won four games before losing in straight sets.
Junior Mike Gershon (East Brunswick) and sophomore Sean Sweeney (Franklinville/Delsea Regional) teamed up to win three games at third doubles before losing 8-3.
"Fordham is vastly improved from last season," Torres added. "They have good players who made fewer mistakes. They were able to not only go for that winning shot but also didn't make very many errors when they had to keep the ball in play. They are going to end up with their most wins in school history and you saw why today."
The Rider women's tennis team hosts Marist College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match on Friday with the Bronc men completing the spring season at Saint Peter's in a MAAC match on April 24.
