WEST LONG BRANCH--The Rider University men's tennis team was swept by Monmouth University in the 2012 spring opener.
"We just played against a team that was better," said head coach Ed Torres.
For Rider, junior Drew Laverty (Mount Royal/Kingsway Regional) won four games at third singles before losing in straight sets.
"Monmouth had a few more matches under its belt," Torres added. "I think if we would not have been in our first match of the spring, the results would have been a little closer. The team battled hard and gave it their best effort but they (Monmouth) was just better today."
Both the Bronc men's and women's tennis team travel to Villanova for a match on Saturday.
