LAWRENCEVILLE--The Rider University men's tennis team was swept by Lafayette College in the fall 2011 home opener on the Lawrenceville campus courts.
For Rider (0-1), freshman Steve Brand (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) split his first two sets at number four singles before losing the tiebreaker 10-4.
"Steve did the best out of all of the players today," said head coach Ed Torres. "It was a good starting match for us. Lafayette had a little more experience than we did. It was a good match and we battled hard."
Brand was also involved in a doubles marathon at the number two slot, teaming with junior Drew Laverty (Mount Royal/Kingsway Regional), losing the match 9-7.
Junior Milo Milosovici (Florence) and junior Ryan Carpenter (Sahuarita, Ariz./Sahuarita) also put up a fight at number three doubles before losing 8-5.
"The two and three doubles did very, very well," Torres added. "The matches in the Monmouth Invitational that we played last week really helped get us into shape for today's match."
Lafayette also defeated Rider 7-0 to open the 2010 fall season.
The Rider women's tennis team opens the 2011 season against Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at 3:30pm on Thursday with the men back in action on September 21 for a MAAC match at Fairfield.
