Men's College Tennis
Fordham University 5, Rider University 2
LAWRENCEVILLE--The Rider University men's tennis team received wins from freshmen Rollie Malfitano and Nick Lubold but it wasn't enough in a 5-2 non-conference loss to Fordham Tuesday afternoon.
"It was a very, very windy day," said head coach Ed Torres. "I'm very happy to say two freshmen won their matches. That is a very good sign."
Malfitano (Wenonah/Gloucester Catholic) won 1-6, 6-1, 6-0 at number one singles with Lubold (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) earning a 6-2, 6-4 win at number six singles.
"A win from the two freshmen is an encouraging sign," said Malfitano who has three wins on the season. "We are looking to build on that success immediately."
This was the first career win for Lubold in three career matches. "It feels good to pick up my first college win," Lubold said. "It was windy today, but I think I played it to my advantage."
The Rider women host Lafayette on Wednesday.
Both the Bronc men's and women's teams are back in action on April 1 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match against Fairfield.
"Fordham, overall was a bit of a better team," Torres added. "We hung in there on four of the matches and we could have easily won two of the three doubles matches. They could have gone either way."
