LAWRENCEVILLE-The Broncs defeated Princeton before losing to Wisconsin Friday.
Against the Princeton Tigers Rider won seven of the 10 matches and against the Badgers of Wisconsin the Broncs won two bouts. "There were a lot of bright spots," said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. "We have a young group, so we're going to be up and we're going to be down this year. The fight is there."
"Wisconsin is a tough, Big Ten team and they grind," Taylor said, 'but I think some of our young wrestlers gave Wisconsin a little bit too much respect. They held back a little, not wrestling their match. Not to take anything away from Wisconsin. Their basics are very solid. We knew they'd be tough and they were."
For Rider (2-1) junior Jim Resnick (Media, Pa./Penncrest), ranked 12th in the nation at 174, won by tech fall against Princeton and won a major decision against Wisconsin to improve to 7-1 on the season.
"Having a team like Wisconsin come in is a big match," said Resnick, who won two matches at Nationals last year, his second trip to the NCAAs. "You know every kid on their team is going to be tough."
Rider senior Jimmy Kirchner (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) won twice at 141, including a major decision against Wisconsin.
"Both of the Jimmy's wrestled well," Taylor said. "Resnick has been wrestling very well and Kirchner beat a kid (Princeton) who he lost to last week," Taylor said.
Rider sophomore Chuck Zeisloft (Woodbury Heights, N.J./Gateway) pinned the 20th ranked wrestler in the nation from Princeton at 125. "That was a great win for Chuck," Taylor said, "beating a nationally ranked wrestler from Princeton."
Freshman Donald McNeil (Plainville, Mass./Wyoming Seminary) won by fall at 197 against Princeton.
Sophomore Evan Craig (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) won at heavyweight against Princeton.
Senior Aaron Nestor (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds) won at 149 against Princeton.
Sophomore James Brundage (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) won at 165 against Princeton before losing 5-3 to Badger Ben Jordan, who is ranked 14th in the nation.
The Broncs take part in the Keystone Classic, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at the Palestra Sunday. "It is going to be a very tough tournament with several nationally ranked teams and wrestlers," Taylor said.
"I'm excited about going to this tournament because there will be some great wrestlers there and I want to show what I can do," Resnick said. "My goal is to be an All-American this year. After two trips to Nationals I feel I now have the experience."
