LAWRENCEVILLE--Both the Rider University men's and women's tennis teams lost a non-conference match to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon in Lawrenceville.
"On both sides (men and women), Mount St. Mary's had a more experienced team than we did," said head coach Ed Torres. "They out-played us by making better shots and fewer errors."
For the Rider men, freshman Stephen Brand (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) won his fifth match of the fall season, a three-set thriller at third singles (7-5, 3-6, 10-8).
"Stephen plays what I would call a power game," Torres said. "He hits solid ground strokes and plays with authority. He is also able to hit shots corner to corner. His biggest improvement has been his serve. He was making a lot of double faults early on and now his serve is coming around and you see the result."
For the Rider women, freshman Michelle Caravaglio (Manalapan/Freehold) won nine games at third singles before losing in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
"Michelle was opposed by a very good player and she played an outstanding match," Torres said. "Her match has long baseline rallies and could have gone either way. She battled through and played well."
The Bronc men travel to Hofstra on Sunday for a non-conference match.
The Bronc women wrap up their fall schedule with a home match against Drexel Tuesday afternoon.
