HAMPTON, VA-The Broncs lost to nationally ranked Kent State and defeated UT-Chattanooga Friday on the first day of the two-day 31st Annual Virginia Duals. "The kids are wrestling the hardest they have wrestled all year," said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. "I'm very pleased with the way we wrestled in both matches today."
For Rider (4-5), senior Rob Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), sophomore Jim Resnick (Media, Pa./Penncrest), junior Aaron Nestor (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds) and sophomore Zac Cibula (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg Casco) won twice Friday. "Nestor had a good day," Taylor said. "He has been aggressive all day. The other three have been consistent all year. All four are wrestling well right now."
Morrison had two pins Friday.
Against Chattanooga, junior Jimmy Kirchner (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) and Cibula both won by fall. Freshman Chuck Zeisloft (Woodbury Heights, N.J./Gateway) won to give the Broncs a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville) and freshman Evan Craig (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) also won for the Broncs.
Against 22nd ranked Kent State, the Broncs won four bouts. Morrison won by pin to give Rider a 16-11 lead and Resnick won a major decision to cut the Kent State lead to 11-10.
Cibula won 2-0 to cut the lead to 8-6 and Nestor won 6-2 to get Rider on the board.
"I wish we had wrestled this well in some of our home dual meets," Taylor said. "Today we beat some better wrestlers then we've lost to this year. I'm hoping this is the weekend we turn things around."
On Saturday, Rider will take on the loser of the Michigan-Buffalo match. "Normally you would think that would be Buffalo but they looked very good in defeating Virginia and they also beat Binghamton this year," Taylor said of Buffalo.
