PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--Both the Rider University men's and women's tennis teams lost at Saint Joseph's in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia.

For the Rider (0-4) women, sophomore Marly Roche (Sussex/High Point Regional) and sophomore Alexa Manforti (Toms River/Toms River HS South) teamed up for an 8-6 win at first doubles with junior Danielle White (Reading, Pa./Reading) and sophomore Jaclyn Giameo (Roselle Park) teaming up for an 8-5 win at second doubles to clinch the point for the Broncs.

"On the women's side, we were minus a couple of players due to a conflict with their class schedules," said head coach Ed Torres.  "With that said, the doubles teams played very well.  They did a good job cutting the ball off at the net.  I'm proud of their effort and this will boost their confidence."

For the Rider (0-3) men, sophomore Ryan Carpenter (Sahuarita, Ariz./Sahuarita) won eight games at the sixth singles position.

"Ryan has improved a lot keeping the ball in play," Torres said.  "Last year, he would spray a lot of errors around and this year, he is playing steadier.  The more you keep the ball in play the more time you have to look for your shot, the kind of shot that you can consistently put away and that's how you become more successful.  You can't always go for that home run shot.  One, you play for your shot and two, you wear your opponent down."

The Hawks defeated the Rider women 7-0 last year with the men also losing to Saint Joseph's 7-0 in the spring of 2010.

The Bronc women travel to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland Friday through Sunday for the Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational that will feature both singles and doubles competition.

"We are going down to Navy for the tournament," Torres said.  "This will be a great experience to play both singles and doubles competition."

The Rider men return to action for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at Siena on October 2.
