MONTCLAIR-The Rider University men's tennis team was swept by the Highlanders of NJIT Tuesday afternoon at Bookdale Park in Montclair.
"We ran into a very experienced team," said head coach Ed Torres. "The players on the team, we are learning and getting better but NJIT was just stronger today. We played hard, won a few games but it still wasn't enough."
For Rider (0-2), sophomore Ryan Carpenter (Sahuarita, Ariz./Sahuarita) won five games at number six singles and teamed with freshman Rollie Malfitano (Wenonah/Gloucester Catholic) to win four games at number three doubles.
NJIT also defeated Rider by a 7-0 score during the spring 2010 season.
Both the Rider men and women travel to Saint Joseph's for a non-conference match at 2pm on Wednesday.
