EASTON, Pa.--The Rider University men's tennis team opened the 2010 fall season on Wednesday afternoon and was swept by the Leopards of Lafayette College.
"In doubles play, Lafayette controlled the net," said head coach Ed Torres, in his 16th season at Rider. "In singles play, the scores weren't great but we made some nice rallies (10-12 shots over the net) and kept the ball in play. Overall, Lafayette had better ground stroke play."
For the Broncs, sophomore Drew Laverty (Mount Royal/Kingsway) won three games at number two singles. Laverty also teamed with sophomore Ryan Carpenter (Sahuarita, Ariz./Sahuarita) to win three games at number one doubles.
"The guys have been working hard and there was good team spirit," Torres added.
Lafayette also defeated the Broncs 7-0 last season in Lawrenceville.
The Rider women open the 2010 fall schedule, hosting Holy Family on Thursday, September 16 at 3:00pm. The men are back in action at N.J.I.T. on September 21 at 3:00pm.
"It was a good first match for the team to get behind us," said Torres. "Lafayette is a strong team and this gives us valuable experience as we head into our next match against another strong team N.J.I.T."
