University of Vermont 2, Rider University 1 (2 ot)
BURLINGTON, VT-The Broncs began the 2010 season Friday with an overtime loss to Vermont in the first round of the TD Bank Classic, hosted by the University of Vermont. "It's disappointing," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. "We had a lot of good chances to win it. Overall it was a solid first performance."
Rider (0-1) took a 1-0 lead mid-way through the first half when senior Kara Perkoski (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) took a crossing pass from sophomore Meghan Mohr (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem) and scored on a header for her sixth career goal.
"Meghan had a great game," Hounsome said. "She was getting down the line, crossing the ball in."
Freshman Jennifer Meier (Sayville, N.Y./St. Anthony's) passed the ball to Mohr for her first collegiate assist.
"We couldn't get that second goal," Hounsome said.
Vermont (1-0) tied the score at 1-1 with less than eight minutes left in the second half. "We made a mistake and they capitalized on it," Hounsome said. "There might have been a foul on the play but it wasn't called and they got the equalizer and they got some momentum."
The Catamounts scored the game-winner from 30 yards out in the 103rd minute of play. "It was a good strike," Hounsome said. "The minute she hit it we all knew it was going in, in the top corner."
Both teams had nine shots.
"The result is disappointing but we saw a lot of good stuff in what we did," Hounsome said. "At this point of the season with a young squad, that is what we need to build on."
Perkoski scored her only goal of the 2008 season against Vermont.
Perkoski was playing her 57th game, 54th as a starter, returning to the front line after playing last season as a defender.
The assist was the second for Mohr in her collegiate career. Last year she assisted on the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Sacred Heart.
Senior Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made her 51st start in the Rider net and made five saves, including a big one in the first overtime on a shot inside the box. "Alex played well," Hounsome said. "She had some good saves and came off her line well."
Rider lost to Vermont 5-2 during the 2008 season, the only other meeting between these two teams.
Vermont was 1-13-3 last season. Rider was 7-11-1 last season.
Rider stays in Burlington to take on the University of New Hampshire Sunday morning at 11 am. UNH began the season with a 1-1 with the University of Rhode Island before defeating La Salle Friday at Vermont. Rider and UNH have never met in soccer before.
