Rider University 19, NJIT 3
LAWRENCEVILLE-The Broncs compiled 17 hits to beat New Jersey Institute of Technology Wednesday. "We swung the bats a little bit today," said Rider head coach Barry Davis. "It was nice to be able to drive some runs in when given the opportunity. All-in-all, it was a pretty good day."
For Rider (12-13) junior A.J. Albee (Ashley, Pa./Hanover Area) led the hit parade with three, including a pair of triples and had three RBI. "AJ has been swinging the bat pretty good," Davis said.
Junior Karl Johnston (Hamilton, N.J./Peddie), junior Mason Heyne (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock), senior Nick Wojnowski (Baldwin, Md./Calvert Hall), freshman Ian Lindsay (Oaklyn/Haddon Twp.) and freshman Mike O'Reilly (Colts Neck) all compiled two hits each for the Broncs. Heyne had four RBI and has now hit safely in six straight games.
"We were able to get some guys into the game who are going to play prominent roles for us in the future," Davis said, "and it was nice to see those guys get in there and do well. We got Lindsay and O'Reilly some at bats today."
Rider jumped out to 4-0 lead in the first inning on two hits, including a two-run triple by freshman Adam Wayman (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial).
The Broncs made it 10-0 with a six-run second inning and a two-run double by Lindsay in the third inning made it 12-0. Lindsay had three RBI in the game.
Freshman Joe Calogero (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill HS West) was the first of six Bronc pitchers and he allowed just one run on four hits and struck out two for his second win of the season. "I thought Joey threw pretty well," Davis said. "We planned on using quite a few pitchers today with the way our schedule has been, (with only four games in 12 days)."
NJIT (4-20) broke the shutout with a run in the fourth inning on two hits and added runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Broncs lost 5-3 at NJIT last year. "A little bit different this year," Davis said.
Rider hosts Manhattan in a MAAC three-game series this weekend. "They are always good," Davis said of Manhattan, "so we better bring our 'A' game."
