LAWRENCEVILLE--Three freshmen, Joe Calogero, Adam Wayman and Ian Lindsay led Rider to victory over Saint Joseph's (15-19) Tuesday afternoon. "All in all a pretty good day," said Rider head coach Barry Davis.

Calogero (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill HS West) started on the mound and pitched eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six while walking just three. "He pitched well and threw strikes," Davis said. "He made them hit it and we caught it. That's what we've been trying to get him to do."

"I felt good today," said Calogero. "I was finally throwing strikes and they hit the ball right to people. My change-up was working well today. I was able to keep it down in the zone and they were swinging over it."

With the win Calogero begins his collegiate career 3-0. "Honestly I didn't expect to come in here and begin 3-0," said the 6'1" lefty. "I thought I might struggle a bit, but I have a lot of confidence in myself."

Wayman (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) had three hits, including a double, and moved from third base to the mound and pitched a scoreless ninth inning. "It was exciting to pitch for the first time here," said Wayman, who has played in 36 of Rider's 38 games and now has 38 hits. "It felt pretty good."

Wayman was an All-State pitcher in high school but also led his league in batting and came to Rider as a player who could play infield, outfield and could pitch. "Whenever coach wants me to pitch I'll be ready," Wayman said. "I pitched a lot in high school and was told I'd pitch some here, but not having pitched yet before today was not disappointing at all. I've been playing a lot and have been very happy at third. Wherever Coach wants me to play I'll play."

"Adam has a good arm," Davis said. "We haven't needed him to pitch up until now. He has decent stuff. He was productive today. I liked what I saw. We knew he was a good hitter and now it looks like he can pitch some . He does a good job for us."

Rider had 11 hits off of four Saint Joseph pitchers.

"We hit the ball good today," Davis said. "We hit with runners in scoring position, something we've been having trouble doing."

Lindsay (Oaklyn/Haddon Twp.) had a triple, a sacrifice fly and three RBI for Rider (20-18), as the Broncs reached the 20-win plateau for 18th straight year.

Also for Rider junior Karl Johnston (Hamilton, N.J./Peddie) hit his first collegiate home run, junior A.J. Albee (Ashley, Pa./Hanover Area) homered, junior Mason Heyne (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) doubled, junior John Ralston (Annandale, Va./Paul VI) doubled and junior Steve Galella (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) had two hits.

The Broncs took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on a walk, a sacrifice bunt, a balk, a sacrifice fly and a home run by Albee, his team-high sixth of the season.

Rider made it 8-0 with five runs in the sixth inning on a walk, a wild pitch and four hits, including a two-run triple by Lindsay.

Rider hosts Princeton Wednesday. "It's a home game that we are going to try to win," Davis said of the non-conference game with the cross-town rival Tigers. "The Princeton games are usually good game, we play each other tough. So I expect a good game tomorrow."
