NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY?Rider lost to Niagara Sunday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game after sweeping the Purple Eagles in a doubleheader Saturday. “It is difficult to sweep a three-game series,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “The positive thing is that we won the series.”

The Broncs committed five errors which led to three unearned runs. “We didn't play defense today,” Davis said. “We didn't take advantage of the opportunity of sweeping the series.”

The Broncs (5-9, 2-1 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by junior Eric Woodrow (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West), and Rider took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when sophomore A.J. Albee (Ashley, Pa./Hanover Area) tripled and scored on a ground out.

Sophomore Patrick Devlin (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock North) pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out three. “I thought Devlin pitched well,” Davis said. “The defense let him down and we didn't hit.”

Niagara (4-13, 1-2 MAAC) broke open a 4-2 game with three runs in the seventh inning on three hits. “We make two errors, we get a double play ball and don't turn it,” Davis said.

Rider junior Matt McCollum (Tabernacle, N.J./Shawnee), senior Maurice Williams (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) and sophomore John Ralston (Annandale, Va./Paul VI) also had hits for Rider. “Mo hit the ball a couple times hard,” Davis said.

Rider hosts Rutgers at 3pm Wednesday and Iona in a MAAC three-game series Friday and Saturday. “It will be nice to play at home, finally,” Davis said. “We've been on the road quite a bit, logging some miles. We're hoping to get back and put a good week together.”
