Rider at Midlands-Day One, Session Two
EVANSTON, ILLINOIS-The Broncs are competing at the 47th Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern University and are currently 19th of 53 teams.
Rider has three of nine wrestlers competing Wednesday. Four Broncs advanced to Session Two Tuesday night.
Senior Ed Bordas (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central), the ninth seed at 285, won 4-1 in the consolations against Steve Franklin of SF State, defeated Bubba Owens of Oregon State 2-0 and then defeated Joe Rizgallah of Michigan State 4-3 on a tie breaker late Tuesday night. On Wednesday Bordas will face the fifth seed, Ryan Tomei of Pittsburgh.
Bordas lost 3-2 to Clayton Jack of Oregon State in the first round.
Junior 165 Rob Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) defeated Greg Zanetti of Rutgers 9-3 in the consolations and then defeated Karl DeCiantis of Pitt 11-3 late Tuesday night. On Wednesday Morrison will face the ninth seed, Tyler Grayson of Central Michigan.
Morrison lost 11-5 to the tenth seed, Josh Asper of Maryland in the second round. Morrison pinned the seventh seed, Bekzod Abdurakhmonov, in 4:47 in the first round.
Sophomore 133 Jimmy Kirchner (Somerville) defeated the tenth seed, Eric Metzler of Northwestern, 13-6 in the consolations before defeating Jeff Newby of Utah Valley 13-0. Kirchner then defeated Bill Putman of Purdue 12-2 late Tuesday night and will now face the sixth seed, Kelly Kubec of Oregon State.
Kirchner was pinned by the seventh seed from Lehigh, Matt Fisk in :52 in the pigtail round.
Sophomore Tyler Smith (Phillipsburg, N.J./Belvidere), the ninth seed at 197, was pinned in 6:25 by AJ Hunt of Pittsburgh in the consolations late Tuesday night. Smith lost 9-0 to the eighth seed, Matt Wilps of Pitt in the second round. Smith pinned Andrew Sanchez (McKen) in 2:28 in the first round.
Senior Michael Kessler (Randallstown, MD/Owings Mills), the ninth seed at 149, lost 4-2 to Jon Kohler of Maryland in the second round of consolations. In the first round of consolations Kessler defeated Jamal Lawrence of N. Iowa 8-3. Kessler lost 5-0 to David Cheza of Michigan State in the pigtail round.
Junior 141 Matt Bradley (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) lost 7-4 to Kyle Bradley of Missouri in the consolations. Bradley lost 12-3 to the fourth seed from Iowa, Joey Slaton, in the pigtail round.
Freshman 174 Jim Resnick (Media, Pa./Penncrest) lost 6-4 in the consolations to Evan Brown of Dubuque. Resnick lost 4-2 to Ryan Smith of Oregon State in the pigtail round.
Freshman 157 Zac Cibula (Luxenburg, Wis./Casco) lost 17-6 in the consolations to Anthony Jones of MSU. Cibula lost 11-10 to Danny Michaels of Cleveland State in the pigtail round.
Junior 125 Ilyass Elmsaouri (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) lost 8-1 in the consolations to the eighth seed, Jason Borshoff of American. Elmsaouri lost 4-0 in the pigtail round to the ninth seed from Pitt, Anthony Zanetta
