Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
Haight/Ashed remain undefeated in doubles play
JERSEY CITY-The Rider University men's tennis team lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at Saint Peter's Thursday afternoon at the Yanitelli Center indoor courts.
For Rider, seniors Will Haight (Sewell/Washington Township) and Marc Ashed (Vineland) teamed up to win 8-6 at first doubles, their fourth win in a row with Haight winning 10 games at second singles before losing 7-5, 7-5. Haight and Ashed are undefeated in doubles play this season.
"Will play very well in both singles and doubles," said head coach Ed Torres. "Will and Marc have not lost this season (4-0) and were the only winners at doubles today. They may be, if not the best, one of the best doubles tandems that I've had in 15 seasons. And in singles, Will had a set point in the second set but was unable to win it. He has a sore arm but still played well."
Last season, the Peacocks defeated Rider 4-3 in Lawrenceville and won 5-2 in Jersey City in 2007.
"Playing indoors seemed to affect us a little," Torres said. "It's not an excuse but Saint Peter's is used to playing on the much faster surface than we are. They practice indoors all the time and most of our matches are outside. Saint Peter's also served very well."
Both the men's and women's tennis teams travel to Staten Island, New York to face Wagner College on Sunday.
