FLUSHING, NY?The Rider University men's and women's teams lost Friday in the opening round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, held at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Rider men lost to the second seed, Niagara. “The guys played up to their abilities, that is all you can ask,” said head coach Ed Torres.
The Rider women lost to the top seed, Marist. “Marist showed why they are the defending champions and the top seed again this year,” Torres said. “We will just chalk this up to experience. When you play the top team you just go out and do the best you can. Marist is really good.”
For Rider freshman Chris Esposito (Ocean Grove/Neptune) won be default. The score was tied at 4-4 in the first set when Esposito's opponent turned his ankle and could not continue.
Junior Casey Jedlinski (Manalapan) played first singles and lost two close set, 6-4 and 6-3. “Casey played a very good match,” Torres said.
The Rider men had three freshmen and a pair of sophomores in the lineup. “We have young guys playing against their experience players,” Torres said. “We're getting better.
They have fun and give it their all.”
The MAAC announced today that Rider senior Shannen Kahler (Ojai, CA/Chaparral) and junior Danielle Morse (Edison/Hopewell Valley) from the women's team, and senior Tom Becker (Cinnaminson), sophomore Alex D'Amico (Clark) and senior James Leone (Forked River) from the men's team earned MAAC All-Academic team honors.
Kahler is a Music Education major at Westminster and owns a 3.75 grade point average. Morse is majoring in Business Administration and has a 3.24 grade point average. Becker is a Biopsychology major with a 3.41 grade point average, D'Amico has a 3.96 grade point average while majoring in Entrepreneurial Studies, and Leone is an English/Biology major with a 3.68 grade point average.
