Men: Rider University 7, Wagner 0
Women: Rider University 6, Wagner 1
LAWRENCEVILLE- The Rider University men's and women's tennis teams defeated Wagner University in non-conference action Sunday. The women won 6-1 while the men swept 7-0. “At every position we were just a little bit better than they were,” said head coach Ed Torres. “We've played matches where the other team shave been better than us. It was good to get a taste of victory. It was good for the morale.”
Both the men and women swept in doubles competition to start off the matches. “As soon as we swept the doubles I could see the writing on the wall,” said Torres. “If you can do that, you know you will do well in the singles. I felt very confident that we could win both matches.”
For the Rider (2-3) men, junior Casey Jedlinski (Manalapan) won his first singles match 6-1, 6-1 and teamed up with sophomore Chris Esposito (Ocean Grove/Neptune) to win at first doubles 8-3. Esposito won his fourth singles match 6-1, 6-1.
Junior Will Haight (Sewell/Washington Township) won his second singles match 6-2, 6-1 while junior Marc Ashed (Vineland) won his third singles match in 6-0, 6-0. Haight and Ashed partnered at second doubles to win 8-0.
For the Rider (2-5) women senior Danielle Morse (Edison/Hopewell Valley) won in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 at first singles. Junior Kristina Paich (Stanhope/Lenape Valley Regional) won at second singles 6-0, 6-0 and partnered with Morse to win 8-0 at first doubles.
“Wagner has a very good number one player,” said Torres. “Danielle was able to come back after losing the second set and take the third set 6-3. She was able to pull through it which was great.”
“I was really motivated going into the third set after losing the second,” Morse said. “I knew I had to play like I did in the first set to win. I was hitting my forehand a lot and hitting into the corners with a strong pace because I wanted the upper hand in the point. I wanted to put some stress onto [Brittany Frazza].”
Freshman Tricia Ashmore (Sparta) won at third singles 6-1, 6-0 and teamed with freshman Danielle White (Reading, Pa./Reading) at second doubles to win 8-5.
Also for the men, Bronc sophomore Robert Olsen (Marlton/Cherokee) (6-3, 6-1) and sophomore Aaron Goldenthal (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) (6-0, 6-0) won their fifth and sixth singles matches respectively. They also paired at the third doubles position and won 8-2.
Also for the women, freshman Alison Clay (East Brunswick) won at fifth singles 7-5, 6-2 while junior Alyssa Markovitz (Scotch Plains/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) too sixth singles 6-2, 6-0.
Freshman Katie Garrity (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and sophomore Amanda Matticks (Sewell/Washington Township) won their third doubles match 8-1.
The Bronc men and women travel to Drexel on Tuesday, October 21st for a non-conference match at 2pm.
“It's going to be difficult,” adds Torres. “Drexel is historically a strong program and we're going to have to play well jus to keep even. If we defeat them it will be an upset, but I think we've been playing well now that it will be a good match.”
