RIVERDALE, N.Y.--Despite a win at first doubles and taking two singles matches to the third set, the Broncs were swept at Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match Sunday afternoon. “The number one doubles team played very well,” said head coach Ed Torres. “They took a decent Manhattan doubles team and defeated them.”
For Rider (0-3), the first doubles team of junior Danielle Morse (Edison, N.J./Hopewell Valley) and sophomore Kristina Paich (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) won 9-8, scoring a 7-1 win in the tiebreaker.
Paich lost a heart breaker at second singles falling in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 10-5 to Casey Conklin. Freshman Amanda Matticks (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) also lost in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to the Jasper's Lindsey Spagnola.
“Overall I'm pleased with the effort,” Torres added. “Manhattan is a little better than we are and if the two three-set singles matches had swung differently, the match would have been a little more even. We had some very good matches. We are young and we battled hard.”
The Broncs host Monmouth on Wednesday in a non-conference match at 3:30pm.
