James Hayes Honored by NJCBA
LAWRENCEVILLE?James Hayes of the Rider University baseball team was named the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division I Pitcher of the Week for all games played March 27-April 2.
Hayes, a sophomore form Sunrise, Florida (Piper), pitched in four games last week and saved all four. Hayes left his starting shortstop position in the seventh, eighth or ninth innings and recorded saves in four straight games, and has now saved five games in his last five outings and six for the season.
As a shortstop last week Hayes collected eight hits in 18 at bats (.444), including seven hits in the three-game sweep of MAAC-rival Saint Peter's. Hayes had the game ?winning hit in the ninth inning in 5-4 win at Saint Peter's Sunday to sweep the series. In the seven inning contest Hayes entered the seventh inning with the bases loaded and only one out, and got out of the jam for the save.
For the season, Hayes is 0-1 on the mound with a team-best 2.38 earned run average, along with his six saves. Hayes has compiled eight strike outs in 11.3 innings pitched, and opponents are batting .222 against him.
At the plate, Hayes is batting a team-high .325 with 27 hits in 21 games.
The Broncs travel to Poughkeepsie, NY for a three-game MAAC series at Marist Saturday (dh) and Monday.
