WEST LONG BRANCH?The Broncs were swept in a non-conference match at Monmouth Tuesday afternoon. “Monmouth has a veteran team,” said head coach Ed Torres. “We battled but they were just a little too experienced.”
In the closest match of the day, junior Casey Jedlinski (Manalapan) lost at number one singles in three-sets 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 10-7 to Benjamin Evenden. “Casey really should have won his match,” said Torres. “He played a player that's been number one for the Hawks for three years and actually led the first set 5-2 before losing. He then won the second set so he was very close to being a straight set winner instead of losing in a three-set tiebreaker.”
Also for the Broncs, freshman Josh Rultenberg (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) took nine games off of Tom Corrie at number two singles before falling 6-4, 7-5.
“Josh also played well against a solid player,” Torres said. “You have to remember that Josh is only a freshman and I thought he played well. It was a long two plus hour match with the players banging the ball against each other. It was a good experience for Josh to go through and he held his own. He will improve his game by experiencing these types of matches.”
“It was a good overall experience to play Monmouth,” said Torres. “Today's match will only help us get better.”
Rider (2-6) travels to Staten Island, New York for a non-conference match at Wagner Thursday.
