FAIRFIELD, CT--The Broncs split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Fairfield Saturday, as the Stags won the series two games to one.
In the second game, junior pitcher Joe Moronese (Glen Gardner/Voorhees) kept Fairfield off the board for eight and two-thirds innings before losing the shutout bid but gaining his first win as a Bronc.
Rider (9-16, 3-6 MAAC) scored the only run it would need in the third inning on a wild pitch, and scored a run in the fourth inning when senior Scott Rich (Hamilton Square/Steinert) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Sean Whalen (Hamilton Square/Steinert).
Junior Jonathan Rehm (St. James, NY/St. Anthony) hit a two-run single in the sixth to give Rider a 4-0 lead, and sophomore Gene Crimoli (Shrewsbury/CBA) hit an RBI double to give Rider a 7-0 lead. Crimoli had four hits in the second game, five hits on the day.
In the first game, Fairfield scored in each of the first two inning before freshman pitcher Mike Dyszel (Bristol, PA/Bristol) settled down to strike out five. The Broncs managed just four hits off of Fairfield pitcher Tom Maisano (4-0), who struck out eight without allowing a walk.
Rider travels to Temple Tuesday.
