LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Rider University softball team used a three-hit performance from
Kiersten Buchanan and a complete game from
Fallyn Stoeckel to defeat Penn on Wednesday afternoon at Herb and Joan Young Field. Rider improves to 16-14 (7-4 MAAC), while Penn falls to 12-15 (3-3 Ivy).
Penn struck first with a run in the opening frame, taking an early 1-0 lead.
The Broncs answered immediately in the bottom half.
Keegan St. Cyr reached on an error and swiped second to move into scoring position before
Maddie Luedtke advanced her to third on a groundout.
Abby Cruz followed with an RBI single to center to even the score, and
Kendall Reda-Fehsal delivered a two-out RBI double to give Rider a 2-1 lead after one.
Rider added on in the second, putting pressure on early.
Fallyn Stoeckel led off with a single and
Kiersten Buchanan drew a walk before a sac bunt from
Melissa Purcella moved both runners into scoring position.
Aspen Wheeler then ripped a two-run double down the right field line to extend the advantage to 4-1.
Penn trimmed the deficit with a sacrifice fly in the third, but that would be all the offense the Quakers could put up.
The Broncs responded once again in the home half, as Buchanan came through with a one-out RBI triple to push the lead to 5-2.
Buchanan stayed hot at the plate in the fifth, leading off with a double before Rider loaded the bases with one out. Luedtke then came through with a two-run single to center, extending the lead to 7-2, which would stand as the final.
