Lacrosse Leads After First Quarter, Ultimately Falls to Lehigh

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University women's lacrosse team was topped Saturday morning by Lehigh, 19-11. The Broncs fall to 1-7 on the season, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 5-2.
 
After falling behind 2-0, Marybeth Smith (Macungie, PA/Emmaus[La Salle]) got the Broncs on the board. Lehigh would score again when Marissa Ross (Reisterstwon, MD/Beth Tfiloh[FDU-Florham]) found the back of the cage. Down 4-2, Maggie Hance (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and Brynn Merklinger (Mendham, NJ/Mount Saint Mary Academy) scored to tie the game. The Mountain Hawks would take the lead with a goal, but goals from Madi Mooney (Vista, CA/San Marcos) and Smith put the Broncs in front 6-5. After Lehigh scored to tie the game, Ross scored to give Rider a 7-6 lead after the opening quarter.
 
The second quarter was all Lehigh with the Mountain Hawks outscoring the Broncs 4-0 in the frame to take a 10-7 lead into the half.
 
Lehigh added to the lead with the first two goals of the third quarter when Smith scored to stop the run, but the Mountain Hawks scored five of the game's next six goals, extending the lead to 17-9. Ross and Hannah Kozik (Ellington, CT/Ellington) would score to keep the Broncs in the game, but the Broncs were unable to make the comeback.

- Saturday's game was the first-ever between the two programs.
- Jamie Kubach (Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter[FDU-Florham]) got the start in net, playing all 60 minutes and making a career-high 14 saves, taking the loss.
