LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Men's Tennis picked up its second straight victory with a 5-2 win over Norfolk State on Sunday morning.
For the third consecutive match, the Broncs kicked off the day by securing the doubles point. Axel Engstrom and Roger Martinez led the charge with a dominant 6-2 win, as Matteus Froberg Dahlin and Cole Thurgur followed it up with a 6-3 win of their own.
Thurgur shined the brightest in singles play, earning a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win over Szymon Malecki and improving to 4-0 this spring. Nathan Slattery and Matthew Griscti also earned straight-set victories in singles, while Heath Paul Waters bounced back after losing the second set to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. For Slattery, it's his third singles win in three competitions over the past week.
Today's contest caps off several strong performances from the Broncs over the past week. Thurgur has gone 6-0 in three matches, only dropping one set in singles and earning three victories in doubles along with Dahlin. Slattery accomplished the same feat in singles, dropping only one set in a win against Florida Southern before scoring two victories in dominating fashion today and Thursday against Morgan State. As a team, the Broncs have secured the doubles point in all three matches.
Men's Tennis will travel to Fairfield for its first conference match of the season on Tuesday afternoon. Rider defeated Fairfield 5-2 at home last season, highlighted by straight-set victories from Dahlin and Griscti. The Broncs have made the MAAC Championships the past two seasons, and scored upset wins over Fairfield and Siena in the tournament last season before falling to first-seeded Quinnipiac in the Championship.
