Lakeland, Fla. — Men's Tennis was defeated by the Florida Southern College Moccasins on Wednesday afternoon in the first of two matches on back-to-back days.
The Broncs began the day on the right track with two wins in doubles. Matteus Froberg Dahlin and Cole Thurgur earned a decisive 6-3 win over George Russell and Onur Turgut, a tandem who are ranked 19th nationally in Division II according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Ibragim Turgambekov and Heath Paul Waters also earned a hard-fought 7-6 (10-8) win to secure the doubles point.
Two Broncs subsequently won their singles matches, both in three sets. After a lopsided first-set loss, Nathan Slattery rebounded to earn a 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Bosko Boskovic. Thurgur also dropped his first set, but came back to blank FSC's Matthew Hewitt in the second en route to a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 win.
Those two matches would not be enough to win the dual, however. Marco Cinotti's win over Axel Engstrom would be enough to secure the match in favor of the Moccasins, who won all four of their singles matches before Thurgur's and Slattery's victories. Despite the loss, Dahlin managed to win the opening set of his match against 8th-ranked Mario Garoz, as would Waters against Turgut.
Men's Tennis is back in action tomorrow against the Morgan State Bears for the second half of a back-to-back in Central Florida.
