Softball Tops St. John's on Final Day at Battle at the Max

GREENVILLE, NC – The Rider University softball team was victorious on the final day of competition at the Battle at the Max Sunday, topping St. John's 17-8 in six innings. The Broncs improve to 4-9 on the season. The Red Storm, who were recently ranked 20th in the Mid Major Top 25, dropped to 14-5 on the year.
 
Aspen Wheeler (Lampasas, TX/Lampasas), Fallyn Stoeckel (Nutley, NJ/Nutley), and Maddie Luedtke (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) all drew walks to load the bases with no outs in the top of the first. Abby Cruz (Corona, CA/Santiago) was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, then after a wild pitch brought in another, Kendall Reda-Fehsal (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0. With one away, Emma Morgan (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) hit an RBI double, extending the lead to 4-0. A pair of St. John's errors allowed two more runs to score in the inning, putting the Broncs up 6-0 before throwing a single pitch.
 
The Red Storm countered with two runs in the bottom of the first, Luedtke led off the second with a solo home run to left. In the third, Wheeler hit a one-out double, then Stoeckel drew a walk and Luedtke was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After an error brought in a run and kept the bases loaded, Reda-Fehsal hit a bomb to straightaway center for a grand slam that extended the lead to 12-2. With two down, Morgan drew a walk and came in to score on a double by Kiersten Buchanan (Holly Springs, NC/Holly Springs). Melissa Purcella (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque Academy) followed with an RBI double and Wheeler hit an RBI single to put Rider up 15-2.
 
St. John's fired back with six runs in the bottom of the fourth, keeping the game alive into the top of the sixth. Stoeckel and Luedtke started the inning with walks. With two down, Keegan St. Cyr (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) walked to load the bases and Morgan delivered the two-run single that extended the lead to 17-8 and secured the win for the Broncs after a scoreless bottom of the sixth.

- Stoeckel got the start in the circle, allowing eight runs, four earned, on eight hits. She struck out one to earn the win.
