LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – After 89 minutes of scoreless action that looked destined to end in a draw, Wagner stunned the Rider women's soccer team in the final seconds to escape with a 1-0 victory.
The Broncs came out strong, as
Tess Ferrie put two shots on frame in the opening ten minutes, both denied by the Seahawks' keeper.
Both teams generated chances in the opening half, but the match remained scoreless at the break, with Rider holding a narrow 5-4 advantage in shots, including three on target.
Early in the second half,
Ava Ferrie nearly broke the deadlock, but her 50th-minute strike rattled the crossbar.
With the game still scoreless deep into the final minute, Wagner's Hailey Knapp lofted a shot just over goalkeeper
Ashley Moore and into the top right corner, giving the Seahawks the deciding goal with only 15 seconds remaining.
Quotes and Notes
"Our games with Wagner are always close, whether it's 0-0 or 1-0. To give up a goal in the final 15 seconds is really disappointing, but in those last 10 minutes they were winning more of the first and second balls. Overall, I thought we were the more dangerous team—we created plenty of chances but just couldn't finish.
There are still a lot of positives to take away, and we had some strong individual performances. We'll learn from this and move forward."
