BUFFALO, NY – Behind a dominant start from
Brian Young and a record-breaking swing from
Joe Tiroly, Rider baseball opened its weekend series at Canisius with a statement 6-0 victory on Friday afternoon.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth, when Rider broke through with a four-run inning.
Erich Hartmann sparked the rally with a leadoff walk, followed by another free pass to
Joe Tiroly.
Kyle Neri drew the third walk of the frame, loading the bases and forcing Canisius to make an early call to the bullpen.
After the pitching change,
Nick Shuhet came through with a two-run single to put the Broncs on the board.
Matt Leahy followed with a two-RBI hit of his own, capping off the inning and giving Rider a 4-0 lead.
The Broncs added to their advantage in the top of the seventh when Tiroly launched his 16th home run of the season, a two-run shot that not only extended the lead to 6-0 but also set a new Rider single-season RBI record, surpassing the previous mark of 60 set by AJ Albee in 2010.
That score would hold as Rider shut out Canisius to take the series opener.
Brian Young delivered a dominant performance on the mound to open the series for the Broncs, not allowing a runner beyond second base in the victory.
