PHILADELPHIA, PA – It was a high-scoring affair on Wednesday afternoon as the Rider baseball team came up short in a 20-16 slugfest against UPenn.
Rider struck first, plating two runs in the opening frame on a two-out single by
Anthony Paskell.
The Quakers responded quickly, putting up four runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a two-run double from Jarrett Pokrovsky to take a 4-2 lead.
Joe Tiroly trimmed the deficit to one with a run-scoring play in the third, capitalizing on a UPenn error. However, the Quakers stayed hot at the plate, answering with four more runs in the bottom half to stretch the lead to 8-3.
The Broncs fired back with a five-run fourth inning, kicked off by
Charley Magoulick's solo home run to right field.
Erich Hartmann and Tiroly followed with back-to-back RBI hits, the latter driving in two to bring Rider within one.
Nick Shuhet then tied the game at 8-8 with a sacrifice fly.
UPenn pulled ahead again in the fifth, plating three runs to take an 11-8 advantage. But Rider continued the offensive battle, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth.
Tiroly started the rally with his second double of the game, scoring Hartmann. Shuhet followed with his seventh home run of the season, a two-run blast to tie it at 11.
Magoulick then gave Rider a 12-11 lead with an RBI single scoring Paskell.
The Broncs padded their lead in the seventh, scoring four more times. RBI singles from Tiroly and Shuhet made it 14-11, before Magoulick drove in two more to give Rider a 16-11 edge.
However, the game took a dramatic turn in the bottom of the seventh.
