LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider baseball team wrapped up their weekend series in style, cruising to a 10-2 victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field.
Rider opened the scoring in the series finale with two runs in the first inning, highlighted by a
Kyle Neri RBI single and an
Anthony Paskell groundout that brought home another run for an early 2-0 lead.
Sacred Heart responded in the top of the second, cutting the deficit to 2-1 on a run scored by Peter Link.
Both teams went scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when the Broncs loaded the bases with one out.
Peter Crespo drove a ball to right field that was mishandled by the Sacred Heart defense, allowing three runs to score on the error and extending Rider's lead to 5-1, despite only recording one hit in the frame.
Rider continued to take advantage of Sacred Heart's defensive miscues in the sixth, adding three more runs on throwing errors and a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 8-1.
On the mound,
Clayton Poliey was dominant for the Broncs, tossing six strong innings while allowing just five hits and one run to keep Rider firmly in control.
Chris Montone came on in relief in the seventh and preserved the lead after Poliey's strong outing.
Erich Hartmann added to the scoring with an RBI single that brought home
Will Gallagher, pushing the lead to 9-1.
Sacred Heart loaded the bases in the eighth but managed just one run, as Montone struck out two to limit the damage.
In the bottom of the eighth,
Anthony Paskell capped off the scoring with a solo home run over the left-field wall, his first of the season, sealing a 10-2 victory and a sweep of the conference series over Sacred Heart.
