Daniela Naves (Alvarado, Mexico/Club Med Academies) won at both singles and doubles, but the Rider University women's tennis team was edged by Siena, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 8-12 (4-3 MAAC), while the Saints improve to 6-10 (4-3 MAAC).
Rider took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Naves paired with
Claire Brown (Duluth, GA/Northview) to defeat Laia Giralt and Manuela Gomez, 6-1, at No. 1, while
Sofia Gutierrez (Miami, FL/Palmetto Senior) and
Laila Fishman (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) got past Reegan Mullaney and Madeline DeFaber-Schumacher, 6-2, at No. 3. The match at No. 2 was halted after the Broncs clinched the point.
In singles, the Saints would take four-of-six flights and the 4-3 match victory.
Maria Buss (Bocholt, Germany/Bischöfliches St.-Josef-Gymnasium Bocholt) scored a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Andrea Vargas at No. 2, while Naves defeated Mullaney, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4. Siena would take a pair of three-set singles victories, including a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (5) victory from DeFaber-Schumacher over
Elle Catanzarite (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) to claim the win.
The Broncs wrap up the regular season Friday, when they travel to Niagara. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
