NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY –
Maria Buss (Bocholt, Germany/Bischöfliches St.-Josef-Gymnasium Bocholt) and
Chloe Monachelli (Somers, NY/Somers) won twice each as the Rider University women's tennis team earned a 4-3 win at Niagara on Friday. With the win, the Broncs improve to 9-12 (5-3 MAAC), while the Purple Eagles fall to 11-12 (5-3 MAAC). The Broncs now await their seeding and opponent in the MAAC Championships to be played next Friday through Sunday, April 25-27, at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor.
Buss and Monachelli paired on a 6-2 victory over Larisa Kotok and Valeria Mora at No. 2 doubles. But the Purple Eagles took the point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3.
In singles, the Broncs would piece together four victories to take the match win.
Laila Fishman (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) coasted by Gabriela Melo, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1, while Buss also earned a straight-sets victory over Isabel Garcia, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2. Monachelli battled to a 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4, victory over Mora at No. 5, while
Elle Catanzarite (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) also won in three sets at No. 6, defeating Mercedes Velasco, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
