Engstrom earns marathon win at No. 5 singles to punch Broncs' ticket

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Freshman Axel Engstrom won a marathon three-set match at No. 5 singles and the Rider University men's tennis team won four-of six singles matches to defeat Siena, 4-3, and clinch the Broncs' second-straight MAAC Championship berth. Rider improves to 9-12 (4-3 MAAC), while the Saints slip to 5-12 (4-3 MAAC).

The Saints took two closely-contested doubles matches to take the point and a 1-0 lead. Matteus Froberg Dahlin (Lidingo, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) and Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) fell at No. 1 to Oscar Martinez and Emilio Zavala Salinas, 7-5, while Bruno Loch Varella and Maxwell Acri edged Engstrom and Cooper Dillon (Brisbane, Australia/Laurel Springs), 6-4, at No. 3. The match at No. 2 was halted at 6-5.

But in singles, the Broncs stormed back with four wins to take the match. Tangri earned a 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory over Fabio Varella at No. 2, while Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) got past Acri, 7-5, 7-6 (6), at No. 3. Cole Thurgur (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean) made quick work of Bruno Loch Varella, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4, while Engstrom scored the decisive three-set victory. He outlasted Dylan Breen, 6-7 (10), 7-6 (8), 6-4, at No. 5 to clinch the victory.
