NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Cole Thurgur (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean) won at both singles and doubles, including an eighth-straight singles win over league foes, but the Rider University men's tennis team was edged at Niagara, 4-3, on Friday. With the loss, the Broncs conclude the regular season at 9-13 (4-4 MAAC), while the Purple Eagles improve to 7-10 (4-4 MAAC). The Broncs now await their MAAC Championship seeding and opponent. However, they will play in the opening round on Friday, April 25, at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor.
The Broncs took the doubles point with a pair of wins at Nos. 2 and 3.
Roger Martinez (Girona, Spain/Saint George's School) and Thurgur earned a 6-4 win at No. 2 over Gurustat Makkar and Mikolaj Kowal, while
Axel Engstrom and
Cooper Dillon (Brisbane, Australia/Laurel Springs) took a 6-3 decision over Jose Maria Garcia and Trevor Masi at No. 3.
But the Purple Eagles would take 4-of-6 singles flights to earn the match win.
Matteus Froberg Dahlin (Lidingo, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) defeated Vid Maric, 6-4, 7-6 (1), at No. 2 and Thurgur battled back from down a set to defeat Garcia, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4. Three of Niagara's four singles wins came in three sets.
