BUFFALO, NY – The Rider University women's basketball team was defeated, 77-61, at Canisius Thursday night. The Broncs fall to 7-21 overall and 5-14 in MAAC play, while Golden Griffins improve to 9-20 on the season and 8-11 in league play.
The Broncs got off to a fast start, going up 4-0 on back-to-back baskets by
Winner Bartholomew (Abuja, Nigeria/Day Secondary School Birgi). Trailing 6-2, Canisius countered with a 7-0 to take the lead. Tied 14-14, the Golden Griffins would end the quarter on a 9-3 run.
Down 25-19 early in the second, the Broncs came back to tie the game win an 8-2 run, including basket by
Camryn Collins (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro),
Mariona Cos-Morales (Matadepera, Spain/IES Matadepera [Casper College]),
Jocelyn Chavez (Surprise, AZ/Valley Vista), and
Aliya McIver (White Plains, NY/White Plains). Once again Canisius would counter with a 7-0 run, taking a 38-31 lead into the half.
Canisius put away the game immediately to start the second half, going on an 8-0 run and later pushing the lead to 22 at 61-39. Rider would end the quarter on an 8-0 run, including four points from
Gabby Turco (Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood Crest[La Salle/Saint Anselm]) and capped by the steal of an inbounds pass and layup by Chavez to beat the third quarter buzzer, to trim the deficit to 61-47 entering the fourth.
The Golden Griffins had a response for every Rider basket in the fourth, once again pushing the lead to 22 at 75-53. Rider would go on an 8-0 run, but was unable to get any closer.

- Canisius had a 42-28 advantage on the glass, with both teams grabbing 11 offensive rebounds. Bartholomew led the Broncs with five rebounds.
