JACKSONVILLE, FL – Roger Martinez (Girona, Spain/Saint George's School) won at both singles and doubles as the Rider University men's tennis team earned a 4-3 win at defending Atlantic Sun Champion North Florida Friday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs improve to 5-9, while the Ospreys fall to 6-12.
The Ospreys took the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 3 and a 7-6 (4) victory at No. 1. Martinez and
Cole Thurgur (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean) took a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Bruno Vietri and Benjamin Scott.
The Broncs then battled back to take four of six singles flights and the match victory, with third sets being decided via 10-point tie-breakers.
Matteus Froberg Dahlin (Lidingo, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) defeated Gianluca Filoramo at No. 1, 6-2, 7-5, while
Axel Engstrom battled to a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) victory over Joao Portugal at No. 3.
Martinez earned his second win of the day, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9), clinching his No. 5 match as North Florida's Benjamin Scott was penalized for excessive overrule.
Matthew Griscti (Madliena, Malta) also earned a straight-sets victory over Spencer Dorosheff, 7-6 (5), 6-2, at No. 6.
The Broncs return to action Wednesday, when they travel to Saint Joseph's. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
