LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Charley Magoulick and
Joe Tiroly each blasted home runs, leading the Rider baseball team to a 5-2 victory over Monmouth on Tuesday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field.
After two scoreless innings, the Broncs broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third with
Charley Magoulick's solo home run to right field.
At the bottom of the fourth inning, the Broncs loaded the bases and added two more runs, capitalizing on a wild pitch to extend their lead to 3-0.
Monmouth threatened in the top of the sixth, loading the bases and prompting the Broncs to replace
Kyle Batt with
Gavin Hawkes with only one out.
Hawkes came up big, forcing an infield fly before sealing the inning with a crucial strikeout to keep the scoreboard clean.
Joe Tiroly continued his impressive run, blasting his eighth home run of the season over the right-field wall, driving in two more runs to make it 5-0.
The Hawks responded with a run in the sixth and another in the ninth, but their rally fell short.
Quotes and Notes
"That was the closest thing to a complete team effort that we've had. Got a great start from
Kyle Batt who set the tone for the rest of the game. Offensively, we took a lot of good swings and made their pitchers work to get us out. We still have a lot to improve on but this was a good glimpse of what this group is capable of."
