LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider baseball team fell on Wednesday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field, as Stony Brook rallied in the eighth inning to secure a 4-2 victory.
Stony Brook struck first, plating a run in the opening inning with a sac fly.
The Broncs responded in the bottom of the fourth when
Mike McGinley delivered a single that brought
Richie Sica home, tying the game at one.
Chris Montone was stellar on the mound for the Broncs, holding Stony Brook hitless until the top of the fifth inning.
Rider then took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth as
Erich Hartmann knocked a single to right field.
The score stayed at 2-1 until the Seawolves answered back in the top of the eighth with Nico Azpilcueta's two-RBI single, giving them a 3-2 edge. Stony Brook tacked on another run to widen the gap to 4-2.
In the bottom of the eighth,
Matt Leahy drew a leadoff walk for the Broncs, but Stony Brook's defense quickly erased the threat with a 6-3 double play.
Rider's comeback hopes were dashed in the bottom of the ninth, as they couldn't come up with a hit to extend the game.
