LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider baseball team fell 10-4 to Quinnipiac in the opening game of a three-game home series on Friday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field.
Quinnipiac took control early, scoring two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats extended their advantage to 4-0 in the third inning, courtesy of a two-run homer by Chris Smith.
Johnny Knox added to Quinnipiac's lead with a solo homer in the fourth, making it 5-0.
The Bobcats piled on four more runs over the next two innings, with Chris Smith and Alex Irizarry each blasting two-run homers to stretch the lead to 9-0.
Entering the bottom of the ninth trailing 10-0, the Broncs showed some late life.
Erich Hartmann put Rider on the board with an RBI single to center field.
Kyle Neri followed up with a two-run shot down the left field line, narrowing the gap to 10-3.
Charley Magoulick would add one more run for the Broncs, but the late rally fell short.
