Matteus Froberg Dahlin (Lidingo, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) and
Cole Thurgur (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean) each won at both singles and doubles and junior
Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) and freshman
Axel Engstrom both pulled out three-set singles victories to push the Broncs past Villanova, 4-3, Saturday night at Delaware Valley Tennis Club. With the win, the Broncs improve to 3-3, while the Wildcats fall to 0-5.
Froberg Dahlin and Thurgur combined on a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Will Monahan and Justin Frattarelli. But the Wildcats took wins at Nos. 2 and 3 to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead in the match. Thurgur earned a straight-sets victory at No. 4 over Trey Fourticq, 6-4, 6-1, to get the Broncs on the board. Villanova would take quick wins at Nos. 3 and 5, both by 6-1, 6-1, margins. But Rider battled back with three three-set victories to edge the Wildcats.
Froberg Dahlin defeated Cooper Gordon, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 7-5, at No. 1, while Slattery earned his dramatic victory at No. 2, defeating Thomas Wakefield, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (10-8).
Axel Engstrom battled back from down a set to defeat Quincy Jones at No. 6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the match victory.
The Broncs return to action Saturday, Feb. 22, when they open conference play at Sacred Heart. First serve from Fairfield, CT, is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
