FAIRFIELD, CT – Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School),
Cole Thurgur (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean) and
Matthew Griscti (Madliena, Malta) each won singles matches, but the Rider University men's tennis team was edged by Sacred Heart, 4-3, in its MAAC opener Saturday evening. With the loss, the Broncs slip to 3-4 (0-1 MAAC), while the Pioneers are now 3-4 (1-0 MAAC).
The Pioneers took the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 wins at Nos. 2 and 3, while the top flight went unfinished. In singles play, Tangri and Thurgur both won in straight sets at Nos. 1 and 4. Tangri defeated Matyas Vencl, 6-1, 6-3, while Thurgur got past Paul Goncalves, 6-2, 6-1. But Sacred Heart would take No. 5 in straight sets and three-set victories at Nos. 2 and 3 to clinch the match. Enrique Laennec-Baffrey defeated
Matteus Froberg Dahlin (Lidingo, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium), 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2, while Antoine Hernandez edged
Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) at No. 3, 6-7 (2), 6-1, 7-6 (5), at No. 3.
With the match already decided,
Matthew Griscti's (Madliena, Malta) third set was shorted to a tiebreaker, with the Broncs sophomore taking the match, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8, at No. 6.
The Broncs return to action Sunday, when they travel to Merrimack for their second league match in as many days.
