NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Rider women's soccer (2-6-5, 0-4-3 MAAC) team faced an early deficit but responded with goals in each half to salvage a 2-2 draw at Iona (4-8-3, 2-4-2 MAAC) on Wednesday afternoon.
Iona wasted no time getting on the board. Just 39 seconds into the match, a clearing attempt by
Ashley Moore deflected to Ava Barker, who converted to give Iona a 1–0 lead. Barker struck again in the 13th minute, tallying her second goal of the day and pushing the Gaels ahead 2–0.
The Gaels nearly added a third in the 21st minute, but their shot rebounded off the crossbar.
In the 28th minute, the Broncs got on the board when
Bethie Morgan curled a free kick into the net from about 25 yards out, making it 2–1.
At the half, the Broncs trailed 8–4 in shots, though both teams stood 2–2 in shots on goal.
Rider came out attacking after the break.
In the 48th minute, after a Rider corner and a scramble for the ball in the box,
Noa Menzing controlled the loose ball near the top of the 18 and slipped a pass to
Lauren Black, who buried her first collegiate goal to bring the match level at 2-2.
In the 63rd minute, Valgerður Sigurjónsdóttir fired two quick chances, but the Gaels' goalkeeper denied her both times.
Iona nearly regained the lead late, as Camille Daniel fired a strike just over the crossbar in the 83rd minute, keeping the score knotted at 2-2 — where it would remain at the final whistle.
