Men's Soccer, Siena Play To Wild 3-3 Draw

Broncs score three in first half, Saints counter with three in second

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Rider University men's soccer's Lovro Kostanjsek (Domzale, Slovenia/Gimnazija Domzale), Xavi Csato (Stuart, FL/The Pine School [Stetson/UNC Greensboro]) and Ryan Vaubel (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North [West Virginia]) scored first-half goals, but Siena countered with three second-half goals as the Broncs and Saints played to a 3-3 draw Saturday afternoon on Hickey Field.

After Patryk Rojek (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) cleared a shot off the line to prevent a Siena goal off a corner kick in the fourth minute, Csato won a ball in the midfield and fed left to a charging Kostanjsek, whose heavy touch got him past a defender into the box before beating a charging Siena goalkeeper Bennet Glinder from 12 yards out for a 1-0 lead less than eight minutes in.

107 seconds later, it was Csato making his presence felt once again. Csato won a ball in the attacking third, evaded multiple defenders into space 20 yards out and unleashed a rocket that Glinder couldn't handle to the middle of the goal underneath the crossbar for a 2-0 Rider lead at 9:28.

The Broncs kept their feet on the gas, scoring a third goal before the end of the first half. Kostanjsek was taken down in the midfield, but Vaubel played the advantage all the way into the box, before finishing low, left-to-right, with a defender on his right hip and Glinder charging off his line.

But Siena wasn't done, scoring in the 69th, 76th and 78th minutes to equalize. A long cross into the box deflected around before Lucas Almeida finished in the 69th. Christian Amaral then struck from 30 yards out into the left upper 90 in the 76th minute. In the 78th, Miguel Plaza headed in a Ben Biton cross in front to tie the game.

The Saints nearly took the lead twice in the 88th minute, but with Broncs goalkeeper Marius Helias (Saint Florentin, France) off his line, Almeida put a header on target. But Luke Kirilenko (McKinney, TX/Impington International College [Virginia]) streaked in to head it off the line. On the ensuing corner kick, Alejandro Perez Jorda put a shot just wide of the left post.
