QUEENS, NY – The Rider University women's tennis team fell at St. John's, 4-0, Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 0-4 on the year, while the Red Storm improves to 2-0.
The Red Storm quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead with the doubles point, taking a 6-2 win at No. 1 and a 6-0 victory at No. 3.
While competitive in singles, the Red Storm took three straight-sets victories at Nos. 1, 4 and 5 to clinch the match victory and halt action.
Claire Brown (Duluth, GA/Northview) split the first two sets against Charlotta Buss, falling, 6-2, in the first, before winning the second, 6-4. The match was halted following the second set. Buss is the older sister of Broncs freshman
Maria Buss (Bocholt, Germany/Bischöfliches St.-Josef-Gymnasium Bocholt), who was also competitive at No. 2. She was narrowly edged in the first set vs. Alexandra Nielsen, 7-6, before Nielsen led the second, 5-1, when action was stopped.
Laila Fishman (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) also put up a strong fight at No. 1, falling, 7-5, 6-3, to Nicoline Sartz-Lunde.
The Broncs return to action Friday, when they travel to Monmouth. The match is scheduled for a 7:45 p.m. first serve from Little Silver, NJ.
